Frequently Asked Questions

Find answers to common questions about Bikeability training

  • What is Bikeability?

Bikeability is the government’s national cycle training programme. It’s today’s cycling proficiency, designed to give people the skills and confidence to ride their bikes on modern roads.

The training is broken down into three levels, each building on the previous one. Level 1 focuses on basic bike control in a traffic-free environment, Level 2 teaches cycling on quiet roads, and Level 3 prepares cyclists for busier, more complex routes.

  • Is the training free?

For schools participating in the Shropshire Council programme, Bikeability training is provided free of charge to pupils. This is funded through local government initiatives to promote safe, active travel.

For individuals, families, and private sessions, there is a cost which varies depending on the type and duration of training. Please contact us for current pricing and any available discounts or funding options.

  • What equipment is needed?

    Essential equipment:

    • A roadworthy bicycle that is the right size for the rider
    • A properly fitted helmet (we can provide guidance on fit)
    • Comfortable clothing suitable for physical activity
    • Weather-appropriate outer layers (jacket, etc.)

We can provide bikes and helmets for those who don’t have their own, but please let us know in advance. All bikes should be checked before training to ensure brakes, tires, and gears are working properly.

  • Where does the training take place?

Level 1 training takes place in traffic-free environments such as school playgrounds, parks, or other safe, enclosed areas.

Level 2 training moves onto quiet roads near the school or training venue. We carefully select routes with minimal traffic to build confidence gradually.

Level 3 training uses busier roads with more complex junctions to prepare cyclists for independent travel. For school bookings, we deliver training on-site or in the local area around your school.

  • What age groups do you teach?

We teach all ages from 5 years old through to adults:

    • Ages 5-7 (KS1): Balance training
    • Ages 7-10 (Years 3-4): Level 1
    • Ages 10-12 (Years 5-6): Level 2
    • Ages 12+ (Year 7+): Level 3
    • All ages: Learn to Ride, Family sessions, Adult training

These are guidelines – we assess each participant individually and tailor training to their skill level and confidence, not just their age.

  • How do I book training for my school?

Booking is simple! You can either:

We’ll get back to you within 2 working days to confirm availability and discuss your requirements. We typically need 4-6 weeks notice to schedule training, though we can sometimes accommodate shorter timeframes.

  • Are your instructors qualified?

Yes! All our instructors are qualified to National Standard and are regularly assessed to maintain their accreditation. They also hold:

    • Enhanced DBS checks
    • First Aid certification
    • Public liability insurance
    • Ongoing professional development training

Our instructors are experienced in working with all ages and abilities, and are passionate about helping people enjoy cycling safely.

  • What if my child can't ride a bike yet?

No problem! We offer specific “Learn to Ride” sessions for children (and adults) who are starting from scratch. These sessions focus on:

    • Building confidence and overcoming fears
    • Balance and coordination development
    • Pedaling technique
    • Starting and stopping safely

Once they can ride confidently, they can progress to Level 1 Bikeability. Our patient, supportive approach means everyone learns at their own pace.

  • What happens in bad weather?

We monitor weather forecasts closely and will make a decision about whether training can go ahead safely. Light rain is fine – we’re used to British weather! – but we won’t train in heavy rain, high winds, ice, or other dangerous conditions.

If we need to cancel due to weather, we’ll rearrange for another date at no extra cost. We’ll always give you as much notice as possible, though sometimes decisions need to be made on the day for safety reasons.
